Facts About Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease of improper metabolism. It is not a disease of improper blood sugars. Blood sugar excursions are just one of the symptoms of improper metabolism.

Diabetics who are able to control their diabetes through oral medications, wearable insulin pumps, diet and exercise will eventually (average 8 – 10 yrs) need Cellular Activation Therapy to control their diabetes.

Diabetes Statistics

$178 billion dollars spent in 2007 for total medical cost for diabetic patients in the US. Since 2002 the cost of diabetes has increased over $8 billion each year.

Medical Expenditures Attributed to Diabetes

Estimated at $116 billion, including $27 billion for care to directly treat diabetes, $58 billion to treat diabetes-related chronic complications, and $31 billion in excess general medical cost.

$115 billion was spent on inpatient hospital care and $15.5 billion on physician’s office visits directly attributed to diabetes.

Indirect Cost of Diabetes

In 2007, diabetes accounted for 15 million work days absent, 120 million work days with reduced performance, 6 million reduced productivity days for those not in the workforce, and an additional 107 work days lost due to unemployment disability attributed to diabetes.

Diabetes caused 445,000 cases of unemployment disability in 2007.

284,000 deaths were attributed to diabetes in 2007. The value of lost productivity due to premature death is $26.9 billion.

According to CDC, in 2005 20.8 million Americans had diabetes, with nearly a third undiagnosed. Another 54 million have pre-diabetes, clinically known as glucose intolerance, and are likely to have the disease if they do not alter their living habits.

The percent of the population with diagnosed diabetes continues to rise. Rates have risen from 2.5% in 1980, to 4.2% in 2002 to 5.8% in 2007 and are estimated to rise to 12% by 2050.

Children - 1 in 3, born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes.

Each day there are 147 patients that go blind, and 92 patients have a limb amputated due to diabetes.

Cost of Inpatient & Emergency Room For a Diabetic

Average length of stay (hospital) for diabetic patient is 4.2 days.
Average number of hospital admits for a diabetic patient per year is 2.
Average inpatient cost is $3,200. (chronic complications – neurological, peripheral vascular, cardiovascular, renal, metabolic and ophthalmic).

$3,200
x 4.2 days
$13,440
x 2 admits

$26,880

Average number of Emergency Room visit for a diabetic patient per year is 3.
Average cost for an Emergency Room visit is $8,800.

$8,800
x 3 visits
$24,400

Average cost for Inpatient, Emergency Room visits per year for a diabetic patient is
$51,280

This does not include outpatient services (physician visits, labs, radiology and insulin therapy) or medications. Without knowing the cost for services/medications the total cost could be close to $100,000 depending on the diabetic’s severity of complications.

Cellular Activation Therapy (CAT) will reduce the overall spend per patient and will give the diabetic patient a better quality of life for a fraction of the cost. CAT can do this by stopping and in most cases reverse the secondary complication of diabetes.

The statistics are from the American Diabetes Association and CIGNA Healthcare
