Glossary Browser - A browser is a program installed on a computer that allows people to browse the web. Many people use Internet Explorer and there are also many others like Firefox, Opera and others available for free online. Domain Name - A domain name is typically what you see when you visit someone's website. If you get your own domain name, it would be something like ThisIsMyStore.com. The 3 main types of domain names are.com (for commercial sites), .net (for network sites) and .org (for organization sites). There are also .edu (for educational sites) and .gov (for government sites, but you can't get those unless you have the proper authority to do so. Domain Registrar - The domain registrar is the company that owns or manages your domain name. They were the ones responsible for buying the domain name for you and manage the information about the domain such as who bought it, who to contact for Administrative or Technical issues and nameserver location (see glossary listing). Hosting - See Website Hosting Nameserver - The nameserver is the place where your website is actually located at. Think of it as the city and state part of your home address. When someone types in your domain name into a browser (see glossary listing), the browser locates what your nameserver is and then finds your domain name on that nameserver which lets people actually se your website. Obviously there's more to it than that, but most folks prefer not to be bogged down in details Website Hosting - Once a website is built, you have to give it a home. This will be where your website will stay where people can come and look at it. There are many places online to get various hosting plans. They can be super cheap at around $75 per year or very expensive at around thousands per month. Most of it is based on things like storage space (how much content your website has), bandwidth (see glossary listing) and other factors. Horton Web Design offers hosting from $75 per year.
